Have you heard of horehound? It’s awesome. It’s really great, and soothing for sore throats. The flavor taste somewhere  between licorice and root beer. There’s a company that makes horehound candies, which are perfect for sucking on all day long when you have a sore throat, I believe that company is Clasy’s.

Next time you have a sore throat, give horehound a try!

I hate cleaning..This is absolutely no surprise to anyone who knows me. However, with two children..duty calls…all too often. When I have to clean I’ve come to find a favorite. It started with a cleaner I found at target. It smelled like olive oil…I loved it. However when we started shopping at whole foods, I started to branch out. I Found Mrs.Meyers. This stuff works great, smells great, and is SAFE FOR YOUR KIDS! You can clean your counters and not have to freak out about the chemicals getting on your baby…When they crawl or chew or roll around on the surfaces in your house ..Love love love it…Basil is my favorite scent so far! Give it a shot!

Eucalyptus Oil has a Great Many Uses.  But what I’m focusing on today is treating some of the symptoms of a cold.

  •      Putting 15-20 drops into a bowl of steaming hot water and leaning over the bowl and covering your head with a towel and breathing deeply will help clear up those nasal passages.
  • so will sprinkling a few drops of oil onto a hankerchief and inhaling deeply
  • Mix equal parts eucalyptus oil and baby oil (sometimes I use olive oil) and rub in the upper chest to help alleviate chest congestion.
  • You can also use the same concoction and put a small smear of it under your nose to clear up a stuffy nose.
  • Got a sore throat? gargle with warm salt water mixed with one or two drops of eucalyptus to help ease the pain.

My family has tried these and they really work! I hope you will consider trying them for your family next time you have a cold. And if you do, let us know. We would love to hear from you!

Cayenne tincture…A must for every herbal moms collection! November 4, 2010

Cayenne tincture is something I just recently came across when my cousin Heidi came to visit this past summer. Heidi is a great source of information for herbal healing. What we use cayenne for the most in our house is cold season! For my two little boys (Ages: 2years and 6 months) we mix the cayenne tincture with olive oile and massage it into their clean bare feet. Then we take a generous amount of baby vapor rub and place a layer of that over the cayenne and oil mixture. Put comfortable white socks on over the mixture and let them enjoy it! Having done this to myself, I know that it feels wonderful! The cayenne even so far from your sinus area clears your sinuses. That and the vapor rub make a wonderful clearing and comforting sensation. We tend to do it most before bedtime. As an adult with a cold it also comes in handy. I recently had a horrible struggle with bronchitis. My husband warmed our kettle and filled a mug with steaming water. He then added fresh lemon juice and local honey, along with just a few drops of cayenne. The lemon and honey combo is lovely and soothing. The Cayenne has a warming effect and the added benefit of helping to clear out your airways and ease your breathing. From the Greene family..it is most definitely a must have in our kitchen! Give it a shot the next time you or your little one has a cold. (Cayenne tincture can be found at whole foods and some health food stores for approximately 11.00 dollars)

Calms Forte vs. Melatonin November 3, 2010

My 3.5 year old daughter has a really hard time winding down for bedtime. We’d thought we’d try somethings to see if they helped.

First we tried Hyland’s Calms Forte. The directions say to give the kids 2 tablets every fifteen minutes for up to 8 doses, then every 4 hours. We did that. And then we waited. And waited. And waited. After 4 hours- no effect whatsoever. My daughter LOVES the taste of them, and will ask for them. But it doesn’t make her sleepy.

Then we tried Melatonin. I bought the bottle of 3mg pills. If She’s restless, and really can’t settle down, I give her half a pill (1.5 mg). It takes about an hour to kick in, but it works 95% of the time. Melatonin is safe because it is a chemical naturally produced by our bodies to help regulate our sleep/wake cycle.

*As a note, I’m not advocating buying a certain namebrand. Only sharing my experiences. =)

FDA bans Hyland teething tablets… November 2, 2010

UGH. Can I start out saying that?

FDA banned (not recalled for further testing) Hyland’s homeopathic teething tablets. They CLAIM that the belladonna in Hyland’s teething tablets was inconsistantly controlled and therefore posed a risk, and oh by the way the bottles don’t have child resistant caps. That is the reason they are banning Hyland’s. “The amount of Belladonna in Hyland’s formulation is a mere 0.0002 milligrams per pill. . . A single pill of the pharmacy formulation is 2,000-4,000 times stronger!”

However, can I just point out this? “The FDA has not evaluated Hyland’s teething tablets for safety or efficacy” If they have not tested it, how can they know? Do they have a legitimate claim to ban it?

My daughter recently ate half a bottle of  Hyland’s teething tablets when we were over at Kerri’s house. And you know what? She is absolutely fine. Not so much as a stomach ache.  I don’t recommend it, but it didn’t hurt her. We even called poison control and they said there is nothing in there that would hurt her. The funny thing is, they banned it two days later.

I appreciate the FDA trying to do a thorough job, but I think they just didn’t do their homework.
